After more than five years of construction, the new and improved version of the Riviera Beach Library opened its doors to the Pasadena community on April 25.

The new building offers state-of-the-art resources, a diverse collection of books and other materials and a welcoming atmosphere serving as a cornerstone of the community for years to come.

“The Riviera Beach Library is more than just a building filled with books,” said Anne Arundel County Public Library CEO Skip Auld. “It is a catalyst for positive change within our community promoting education, inclusivity and empowerment. I appreciate the community’s patience during construction and I know the positive impact the library will have on our customers is sure to be felt for years to come.”

The 20,000-square-foot facility has a brand-new collection of books, plenty of window seating and outlets for charging electronics.

Val Skarbeck, a Pasadena resident and former librarian at the old Riviera Beach facility, was on hand for the grand opening to see the changes.

“This is a whole different world, all the new books and the play area for kids and teens, they didn’t have any of this before, she said. “I’m sure the kids will have fun here.”

The design concept of the library ties in a nautical theme to represent the area’s history as a resort community at the edge of the Chesapeake Bay. Local architecture firm Grimm + Parker describes the building as having an underwater theme with surfboard-shaped counters and a “boat ceiling.” Nautical references can be found throughout the library including the use of coastal materials and colors along with oars and anchors painted as finishing touches.

Other library features include 20 computers, four study pods, a shared kitchenette, three booths with diner-style seating for integrated charging, four small study spaces, a cafe area, a dedicated printing area, a children’s play area called “Discovery Dock,” a teen play area called “Club 1117,” multiple large multipurpose spaces and Wi-Fi.

“I’m thrilled to see the completion of this much-needed addition to our community,” said County Executive Steuart Pittman. “The Riviera Beach Library will serve as a hub for learning, creativity and connection for residents.”

Now that the library is back, so are its upcoming events such as teen movie nights, book club, music classes, game nights, Annapolis Opera concerts and much more.

The next library in line for renovation will be Glen Burnie Library, which is expected to be completed by 2026.
