Anne Arundel County school officials are investigating a rap music video posted online that looks to have been filmed in Arundel High School in Gambrills.
Nobody in the music video, which makes visual and lyrical references to sex, drugs, and violence, has been identified as a current student, said Bob Mosier, chief information officer for Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
“I can tell you, we are aware of it, and we are investigating it,” he said.
When contacted, Arundel High officials referred questions about the subject to Mosier, who did not provide details of the investigation.
Parents around the county who have seen the video have expressed concerns in emails to The Capital, wondering how people who don’t appear to have a current connection to the school were able to gain access to it.
The video, “Wanna Be” (remix) was posted to YouTube by The Rogue Boys two weeks ago and as of Wednesday has18,000 views.
The nearly three-minute video starts with a satirical disclaimer: “WE ARE NOT RAPPERS … No one was hurt in the making of this video and everything was for educational purposes.”
Next, two young men are shown walking through the hall to a classroom in what appears to be Arundel High. They sit in a classroom filled with other people, one of whom is using a vape pen, music starts, and they begin rapping explicitly about having sex and fighting.
The video goes on to show scantily clad women dancing and ends with a clearly fake fight.
On the Rogue Boys’ YouTube page, someone using their account wrote, “Your principal let us in after-hours,” when responding to a question about how they got into the school.
The Capital reached out to the group via social media but has not received a response.
Arundel’s principal, Gina Davenport, who will be leaving her post at the end of the school year, declined to respond to a request for comment. County officials say Davenport’s departure is unrelated to the release of the video.
On May 1, Kimberly Winterbottom was announced as the new principal, effective June 26. Winterbottom is currently the principal of Marley Middle School in Glen Burnie. Davenport’s next assignment has not been announced.
The Rogue Boys page has 44 other videos, primarily of people going on blind dates, but this is the first music video they’ve posted.
