Pappas Seafood Co.’s Parkville market will close in late April after 16 years in business.
The market will sell its last crab cakes on April 28, the local seafood chain said Friday, blaming the closure on aging infrastructure. “Unfortunately, this old building is in need of costly repairs that are well beyond our budget,” a post on the Pappas Seafood Facebook page says.
The market at 1801 Taylor Ave. used to serve as the shipping department for Pappas Seafood Co., which also operates four restaurants and a carryout in Perry Hall. It was used as a hub for catering operations, too.
“This building housed and created life long friendships, families, irreplaceable memories, and so much more. We wouldn’t be Pappas Seafood Company without this little old building that could,” the company wrote on Facebook.
The market serves prepared food like crab cakes — once included on Oprah Winfrey’s list of “favorite things” — cream of crab soup and shrimp salad sandwiches, as well as some fresh seafood, such as mussels, salmon, snow crab legs and lobster tails. Pappas Seafood said customers can head to a similar market in Perry Hall after the Parkville location closes.
The Perry Hall express carryout, which opened last fall, will have the “same kitchen, same staff, same beloved recipes,” the company wrote.
Parkville diners can still eat in at the Pappas Restaurant & Sports Bar at 1725 Taylor Ave. Pappas Seafood, founded in 1971, also ships some 3.5 million crab cakes annually across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
