Paulie Gee’s Hampden, a Brooklyn, New York pizzeria franchise, is closing its doors on Thursday after eight years.
Robert Hanlon and Jack Armstrong first reported the news on their Instagram page, Bob’s Pizza Tour.
The comments and DM’s on their page have been flooded with pizza lovers around the city showing their support for the restaurant, Hanlon said in a statement to The Sun.
The Hampden restaurant, owned by Kelly Beckham, opened its doors at 3535 Chestnut Ave. in 2016.
Hanlon called Beckham a massive supporter of the pizza community and other local pizza restaurants in Baltimore.
“I owe Kelly, and his team, a big thank you for welcoming me and my tours with welcome arms and welcoming our guests into his space,” he said. “It was always an incredible experience to hear Kelly share stories about his pizza journey from starting at the Baltimore Farmer’s Market under 83, meeting Paulie Gee in his backyard, to the launch of Paulie Gee’s in Hampden.”
A representative from Paulie Gee’s could not be immediately reached for comment.
The original Paulie Gee’s in Brooklyn was opened by Paul Giannone in 2010.
The pizzeria serves Neapolitan-style wood-fired pies with flavorful options like the Brisket Pizza (barbeque sauce, mozzarella and brisket with pickled red onion and honey-bourdon reduction), the Popeye and Olive Oil (mozzarella, garlic and spinach) and the Hot Child in the City (rosemary pecorino, parmesan, sliced red onion, fennel sausage and hot chili oil). Prices vary from $14 to $28 depending on size.
Paulie Gee’s plans on returning with a new format or new location, according to Hanlon.
“Paulie Gee’s Hampden will surely be missed,” he said. “A Hampden staple and a true pizza destination in the city.”
