An Elkton man was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to a series of thefts from seafood restaurants, according to court documents.

All but 30 days of Zachary Stephen Bennett’s sentence were suspended, and he will begin serving time Feb. 22, the documents say. He pleaded guilty on Dec. 9 and was sentenced on Jan. 14.

Bennett’s lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.

Bennett, 34, was charged last summer with a string of thefts and charges related to illegally operating a food service business, including the theft of cooking equipment, such as steam pots and burners, from seafood establishments around Elkton.

In July, Bennett was illegally running a food business. His establishment, Captain Zac’s, caught fire July 8, resulting in more than $100,000 worth of damages, property owner Greg Kauffman told The Baltimore Sun last year.

Alyson Getty, owner of one of the businesses Bennett was convicted of stealing from, K&A Crabs in Elkton, said in an interview with The Sun last year that she became aware of his stealing from a Facebook post published by the owner of The Crab Trailer, another victim.

Getty then noticed that belongings had been stolen from K&A Crabs as well, totaling around $2,000 to $2,500 in lost equipment.

Bennett is also awaiting trial in early April on similar theft charges.
